MOUNTAIN BIKING IN THE PALOUSE

Moscow Mountain

Where: Go through Moscow. Take Hwy 95 North about 4 1/2 miles. Turn right after the overpass and head toward the mountain.

Trails: Dirt road that goes up to the top of the mountain and alot of different trails that come down. Not all the trails come down to the same place you started. Be careful when choosing your way down.

Difficulty: Mostly moderate - varies with trails

Distance: Approximately 5 miles to the top by the road. Varies with trail routes down.

St. Joe National Forest

Where: Go through Moscow, North on Hwy 95, take a right fork at Potlatch "Y" onto State Route 6 through Harvard.

Laird Park

Where: After Harvard (drive a few miles) to the Laird Park/Camp Grizzly Sign, turn right. At Laird Park head right towards Little Sand Creek to trail #330 (look for the sign).

Laird Park Area has multiple-use trails, group picnic area, campground, fishing in the Palouse River, and swimming area. The Laird Park Campground is the largest on the Palouse Ranger District and is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Distance: 10.2 miles to Moose Creek Reservoir, same distance back to trailhead.

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

White Pine Campground

Where: After Harvard, pass Laird Park turnoff to the sign for Giant White Pine Campground. Take a right into the campground.

What: There is a network of trails in the area. A trail guide is at the bottom. It is mostly up going away from the campground. On your way back you come down.

Distance: Varies from a 1 mile to an 18 mile loop trail.

Difficulty: Moderate to more difficult

Elk River Area

Where: From Moscow, take Hwy 8 through Troy to Elk River.

The Elk River area is located approximately 50 miles east of Moscow and features several outstanding natural areas which are popular recreation destination points. Elk Creek Falls Recreation Area is just south of the town of Elk River. This popular scenic attraction is designated for day use only. Important features of the area are:

Giant Western Red Cedar Tree

The largest cedar tree in Idaho is located along a National Recreation Trail in an ancient cedar grove approximately 10 miles north of the town of Elk River. The big tree measures 18 feet in diameter, stands 177 feet tall, and it is estimated to be over 3000 years old.

Morris Creek Cedar Grove

The Morris Creek Cedar Grove is situated approximately 10 miles northwest of Elk River. There is a loop trail leading into this 90-acre grove of trees that are 400-500 years old.
