Overview

Imagine a rolling table top of wheat, timber, lakes, and mountains bounded on all sides by wild rivers. Welcome to the Camas Prairie. The Prairie covers about 200,000 acres. With an average elevation of 3,000 feet, the Prairie is bounded to the west by the Snake River, to the south by the Salmon River Canyon, and to the north and east by the Clearwater River.

The Prairie is as rich in history as in its agricultural bounty. The land of the famous Camas root inhabited by the Nez Perce Indians opened its arms for settlement and homesteaders flocked to stake out their claim for land in the fall of 1895.

Today, agriculture remains the dominant economic force. However, country like this couldn't escape the eyes of recreationalist who flock to the Prairie for its camping, hunting and skiing as well as its proximity to the rivers which border it.
